From a business point of view, most products and service can be categories as Excludable and/or Rival, which further breaks into Public and Private goods.  Both kinds of goods are important, but only private goods benefit from the economic forces of capitalism, while public goods at best are provided though political processes that essentially are the true origins of taxes and the creation of governments that manage them.

The Tragedy of the Commons is the ineffectual attempt by communities to use capitalism to manage shared goods and services.  Public land overgrazing, air/water pollution, public healthcare, freeways, public education, police/fire departments, even the notion of national monetary currency are impractical if implemented without being funded by taxes imposed on everyone.

Most of the critical products and services that exist are public goods.  Many who criticize governments and tax policies fail to provide due diligence on what better economic models to replace them with at their own peril.
